Death Metal Record Labels
From old-school and technical death metal to brutal and melodic substyles.
Death metal's label landscape splits fairly cleanly into two worlds, and knowing which one a given label sits in matters more than genre alone. On one end are the large, decades-old imprints — Nuclear Blast, Century Media, Metal Blade, Relapse — that run international distribution, professional PR, and a release calendar stretching a year or more out. They sign selectively, usually from bands with an existing profile: prior releases, a touring history, sometimes an established fanbase from a previous label. On the other end are the specialist and regional labels — Xtreem Music, Sevared Records, Comatose Music, Transcending Obscurity — often one or two people, deep inside a specific substyle (brutal, technical, old-school, cavernous), with far more direct relationships to their artists and far more willingness to take a chance on a first release.
Death metal itself covers enough ground that "does this label do death metal" is rarely the useful question. Old-school/death'n'roll acts, brutal and slam-leaning bands, technical/progressive death metal, and melodic death metal each tend to cluster around different labels' rosters — a technical-death specialist label is a poor fit for a straightforward old-school act even though both are "death metal" on paper, and vice versa. Checking a label's actual current roster (not just its genre tag) is the fastest way to tell whether your band's specific sound already has a home there.
Career stage matters as much as sound. A large label's submission process, when one exists at all, usually assumes a finished, professionally recorded release and some existing momentum — they're evaluating whether to invest in something already working, not helping a band find its footing. Smaller and specialist labels are frequently the more realistic first home for a band without a release history yet, precisely because the relationship is closer and the bar for "is this worth the risk" is different. Neither tier is inherently better; they solve different problems at different points in a band's life.
None of this means genre fit alone decides where a band belongs. A label's size, its typical roster's career stage, its country and touring networks, and how selective it actually is in practice all shape whether a specific band and a specific label make sense together — which is exactly what comparing your band against the full label database, not just a genre list, is for.
