Black Metal Record Labels

Atmospheric, raw, and orthodox black metal labels, from cult tape labels to established imprints.

Black metal's label scene runs unusually deep for how underground much of the genre still is. A handful of internationally distributed labels — Season of Mist, Peaceville, Osmose Productions — sit alongside a much larger population of small, aesthetically specific imprints built around a particular strand of the genre: raw/lo-fi black metal, atmospheric and depressive black metal, orthodox and war-metal-adjacent black metal, or the more melodic and symphonic end of the spectrum. Many of the most respected black metal labels are still run by one or two people out of genuine scene involvement, not a commercial operation in the usual sense.

That aesthetic specificity matters more here than in most other metal subgenres. A label built around raw, lo-fi cassette releases and a label putting out polished, orchestral symphonic black metal are both "black metal" labels, but a submission to the wrong one is a mismatch of philosophy as much as sound — production values, visual presentation, and even how a label talks about its artists tend to signal which lane it's in. Listening to a handful of recent releases from a label's actual roster tells you more than its self-description does.

Format matters too, in a way it doesn't for most other genres on this site. A meaningful share of black metal labels still prioritize vinyl and cassette releases over digital-first strategies, and some work almost entirely through limited physical runs. If your band's plans (or expectations) assume a digital-first release, checking a label's actual release history for format is worth doing before reaching out.

As with any genre, label size and current activity say more about fit than the genre tag alone — a label press-shy about lineup or barely active in the last few years is a different proposition than one releasing steadily. Comparing your band's style, stage, and goals against the full label database, not just a genre list, is the more reliable way to find where you actually fit.
